Celebrate French Heritage in Iowa!
Bienvenue!
Welcome to Le Festival de L' Heritage Francais, and Adams County . . . where the spirit of hospitality has thrived since the days of Icaria, an experiment in communal living initiated by French Democratic Socialists searching for their Utopia on 3,000 acres of rolling prairie east of Corning in 1852.
Icaria was founded on leader Etienne Cabet's book, Voyage en Icarie, which described a community based on brotherly love, equal rights, no private property, and no division between rich and poor. It described the perfect life, a Utopia, where it was all for one, and one for all.
The Icarians introduced strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus, lilacs and irises to the area. They were famous for their vineyards and orchards of apples and cherries as well as the Percheron horses they brought from France.
Early Adams County settlers came to depend on the Icarians for their socialization. The pioneers attended plays and recitals at the Colony, were exposed to skilled musicians, artists, painters, craftsmen, and were tutored in French and German. These were rare experiences amid the rugged atmosphere of frontier life. The Colony disbanded in 1898, but the roots remained forever embedded in Adams County's heritage.
Le Festival de L' Heritage Francais is a celebration of the culture and contributions of Icarians to the early development of Adams County and Iowa. Join the fun in Central Park at Corning, Iowa on Saturday, June 6, 1998, to sample wines and food, enjoy mimes, puppeteers, artists, storytellers, and musicians. Stroll through the flower, quilt and art shows. Take an Icarian Heritage Tour, browse the museum, watch the parade, and shop the French Market. Enjoy FAX, during a supper show at the Cabaret and afterward tap your toes to a blues-jazz band at the Wine and Beer Garden.
